Carbon Black Refining and Activation Plant Quote
Refining & Activation Plant
Many tire pyrolysis operators are sitting on a liability. A tire pyrolysis project that produces low-grade landfill carbon char can be upgraded to high-grade carbon black and activated carbon. A refining and activation plant is the equipment scope that performs that conversion, and Klean Commodities quotes it direct from the manufacturer.
What the plant does
- Refining — classification, de-metalling, fibre removal and milling of crude char to a controlled particle size distribution.
- Activation — thermal or chemical activation to develop the pore structure and surface area required of activated carbon.
- Finishing — pelletising, granulating, drying and dust-free packaging for industrial handling.
- Quality control — laboratory and instrumentation to hold lot-to-lot consistency.
Why this scope changes a project's economics
Low-grade char carries a disposal cost. Refined carbon black carries a filler and pigment price. Activated carbon carries a higher price again, into water treatment, gas cleaning and odour control markets. Adding this scope therefore attacks the pyrolysis project's economics from both ends at once: it deletes a cost line and creates two revenue lines from material that was already being produced.
Retrofit or new build
The scope can be installed as a retrofit alongside an existing pyrolysis plant or built into a new facility from the outset. Retrofits need a careful look at char handling, available footprint, utilities headroom and the existing permit, because an activation step changes a site's emissions profile and usually requires a permit variation.
Scoping data
Send a char analysis, your current and projected char tonnage, your target products and grades, available utilities and your permitting position. Those inputs determine whether refining alone is justified, whether activation pays, and what the equipment list looks like.
Delivery support
Klean Industries can take the project from feasibility study through design and engineering to turn-key EPC (DBC) delivery, and has delivered rCB equipment and systems in the United States and Japan.
Decide refining and activation separately
These are two investment decisions, not one. Refining alone may be enough if your local market wants filler and pigment grades and your char is relatively clean. Activation adds capital and energy cost but opens adsorption markets at higher value. Modelling them as separate stages, with activation as an optional later phase, frequently produces a more financeable project than presenting the full scope as a single capital ask.
Product qualification
Plan laboratory capability and sample programmes into the project from the start, because your first customers will qualify the output before they contract for it.
